Sustainability

Our Commitment

Focusing on measurable action, continuous improvement and transparency, our sustainability strategy ensures we deliver high quality sterile injectables while contributing positively to a more sustainable future for the pharmaceutical industry.

We are committed to embedding sustainable practices across our operations, facilities and supply chain. Taking a structured, evidence-based approach to sustainability we align our environmental ambitions with internationally recognised frameworks and standards.

This commitment reflects our belief that responsible manufacturing strengthens resilience, drives operational efficiency and supports the success of our clients.

Climate Action and Carbon Reduction

In 2022, Symbiosis undertook a baseline carbon footprint assessment to better understand the emissions associated with sterile manufacturing operations and identify opportunities for meaningful action.

Reducing our environmental footprint is a key priority and the insights gained informed targeted investments and operational improvements to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions intensity, particularly during the design of our Bruce Building facility.

Science-Based Targets

Symbiosis has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ensuring our climate action is aligned with the latest climate science. We have committed to a science-based 1.5°C target by 2030, supporting global efforts to limit temperature rise and accelerate corporate decarbonisation.

Our near-term science-based emissions target has been approved by the SBTi and this validation provides assurance that our emissions reduction pathway is robust, credible and aligned with best practice.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Facilities

At the Bruce Building, we have implemented several initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels:

  • Introduced a more energy efficient air handling system
  • Installed automated manufacturing equipment
  • Transitioned from a gas-based energy source to electrical, utilising air source heat pumps.
  • Source 100% of our electricity from renewable energy providers

These measures are estimated to reduce the energy required to manufacture each vial of biopharmaceutical drug product by ~25%, while also supporting long-term reductions in operational emissions.
